We’ve been waiting with bated breath, but now it’s official – Wyndham has secured a new A-League team! And that’s not all, the beautiful game will have a shiny new home in Tarneit after the proposed Wyndham Stadium received the official go ahead.

One of two new Football Federation Australia expansion licences was officially awarded to Wyndham on December 12, when the bid from Western Melbourne Group and Wyndham council was officially given the green light.

Wyndham’s new team will hit the ground running in order to be ready for the 2019-20 season, which kicks off this October. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, assistant coach John Anastasiadis has already been appointed and work will now begin to find a cracking group of players to represent the West. The team will be based at Geelong’s Kardinia Park while the stadium at Sayers Road is being built.

The new 15,000-seat stadium in Tarneit will be Australia’s first soccer-owned and soccer-specific stadium and is expected to be ready for the 2021-22 A-League season. Once completed Wyndham Stadium will include elite training pitches, sports medicine facilities, and a gymnasium. The building is also part of a wider commercial and residential upgrade for the surrounding area.

According to a Star News article, the Western Melbourne Group has started preliminary planning for the stadium and is expected to turn soil on the project within the next 12 months.

After community consultation and a lengthy commercial bidding process, this announcement will bring much excitement to the Wyndham area. The introduction of another A-League team and the development of Tarneit’s stadium will have numerous benefits for the wider region too. It’s also a vote of confidence in the area, identifying Tarneit and Wyndham as a site of growth.

We can’t wait to see Wyndham Stadium once it’s complete, and will definitely be heading to a game when the new team take to the field for the first time!
