Winter Street Party 2018

Winter celebrations have been a staple of community life since time immemorial, across many diverse cultures. They’re an opportunity to come together in spite of the cold, to share in the warmth of the collective spirit.

This winter, Wyndham celebrates the season with its Winter Street Party, an extravaganza of food, arts and performance spread across the four major precincts of Werribee City Centre: Station Place, Watton St, Wedge St Piazza and Wyndham Cultural Centre.

Major draws this year are the installation pieces What’s That? by Amanda Parer, and Neon by Carla O’Brien. What’s That? is sure to enthral: a glowing giant, almost two storeys tall, will loom over the crowds as it has in Prague and Amsterdam, bringing a touch of SF fantasy to Melbourne’s west this winter.

Neon, on the other hand, sees O’Brien exploring a more playful interactivity in touchable works that present an immersive, 3D multicolour experience sure to light up the night. There’ll also be roving performances featuring LED robots, a glowing dream bear and luminous Fireflies adding to the vibrancy.

Beside the spectacle of the above, party-goers can expect to be enchanted by such events as WEAVE, telling the story of the Pleiades or ‘Seven Sisters Dancing’; Sway’s dancing sculptures, by Will Frances; and the colourful presence of Carla Gottgen’s larger than life Babushkas.

Local business will be open late, adding to that winter marketplace charm, and there’ll be plentiful activities for the kids including glow-in-the-dark face painting and snow-globe making workshops, making it a true family affair all round.

So chuck on your winter woollies and get along to this special seasonal event! The Wyndham City Winter Street Party kicks off at 4pm on Friday 29 June at the Werribee City Centre, Watton St. For more information, phone 9742 0777 or email Wyndham council with your enquiry.
