With the affordability and rising popularity of Melbourne’s western suburbs encouraging more and more people to look to places like Orchard Tarneit to pursue their home ownership dreams, it is critical that infrastructure not be overlooked in the face of such growth.

Of primary importance in this regard is, naturally, our roads.

As early as 2016 the Victorian Government recognised the need for better roads and announced the Western Roads Upgrade – a $1.8 billion initiative to upgrade 8 major arterial roads to improve safety, reduce congestion and enable better access to jobs, schools and shops in the West.

This February, Minister for Roads and Safety Luke Donnellan tabled its Project Summary for the upgrades in Parliament.

In welcome news, the government has assured the public that these roads will be toll-free under a long-term partnership with Netflow to improve – and, in a first for projects of this nature, maintain - 260km of arterial roads over twenty years.

Early works will be commencing over 2018 and 2019, involving ground surveys, geotechnical studies, utility service relocation and preliminary drainage. Among the many upgrades, residents can expect to see improvements to Leakes Road and Doherty Road enabling better traffic flow and access to Tarneit station.

To ensure the public are kept informed about the progress of these major upgrades, Vic Roads has scheduled a number of information sessions this week and next in areas where works will be commencing.

Those living in Tarneit interested in viewing the designs for the above upgrades and chatting to the project team should make their way to the Penrose Community Centre any time between 6 to 8pm this Wednesday, 6 June.
