A little way north-west of Tarneit lies one of the most spectacular national parks in Victoria, if not Australia – Lerderderg State Park.

This stunning stretch of natural beauty covers over 55 square miles and is home to the exquisite Lerderderg Gorge, carved out by the Lerderderg River. Rising in the Great Dividing Range, the river has cut a 300 metre deep gorge through sandstone and slate to almost bisect the park.

Exploring Lerderderg State Park reveals a true Australian bush experience, with several tracks offering a variety of walks from low impact to strenuous overnight hikes for experienced bushwalkers only.

One definite place to visit is MacKenzie’s Flat, a popular picnicking area with electric barbecues, toilets. Those looking to burn off a bit of their BBQ lunch can take a 30-minutes each way stroll up to Grahams Dam, a gorgeous little waterhole to cool off in.

O’Brien’s Crossing, recently converted to a day-visitor site, now features a dedicated, purpose-built campground for overnight camping, and is another key site that will reward a visit from intrepid travellers.

Located near the Upper Chadwick Track in the north-western reaches of the park, this picturesque river crossing is also the starting point of some fine hiking experiences, including to the Byers Back Track and Tunnel, tracing an old water race around the steep Lerderderg Valley giving fine views of the river.

In addition to the above campground, camping is also permitted at Ambler’s Crossing. This is a 4WD or walk-in only site due to the terrain, with the track surface accessible in dry weather only. Prepare for a basic bush camping experience! You’ll also need to bring sufficient water or know how to make untreated water safe for drinking.
