Need more ‘Orchard’ in your life?

Fruit orchards have always been a staple of life in Melbourne’s outer west. In fact, Orchard Tarneit used to be an orchard itself! Although Eastcott Estate where Orchard is now located closed the gates many years ago, there are still a few operational orchards about, perhaps even closer than you think…

One of the huge advantages of living in the local Tarneit area is its half hour proximity to the city. While the city is always an exciting hub to visit, if you are looking to explore the best of Melbourne at a different pace, all you have to do is set your sights northwest, towards Bacchus Marsh.

Bacchus Marsh is home to Paynes Orchards, one of the last, genuine small family orchards remaining in Australia. In the 1950s, the Payne family moved 300 apple trees from East Burwood to the deep west of Melbourne. With rich soil and vast open space to expand, the orchard soon grew to include a variety of seasonal fruits to complement their main crop.

Paynes Orchards has seasonal fruit growing for nine months of the year. Blossom season starts with cherries of both the sweet and sour variety in November and December. A selection of berries take over in January, and are joined by stone fruit, including apricots, peaches and nectarines through January and February.

The apples that started it all start to bloom in March. Paynes Orchards has a huge selection growing at any given time, including Royal Galas, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Fuji and Pink Ladies. The apple season normally finishes up around May, leaving ample time to live out your harvest dreams.

What’s more, there’s a ‘Pick Your Own’ option, where you are able to pick your own fruit, pay per the kilo and take it home to eat, ensuring you get the freshest (and most delicious) fruit available. This option is perfect for a family day out, a unique date idea or a relaxing solo exploration of your own backyard.
