If you’re a resident of Melbourne’s western suburbs, chances are you’ve seen them in your nearest shopping hub: within affectionately old-school shop interiors, immaculately groomed chaps cut, trim, style and sculpt the hair of their customers with the utmost care, serving them freshly brewed coffee and – for the over 18s – the occasional beer.

If that sounds familiar, then you likely already recognise the above description as Grindstone – or, to give it its full title, Grindstone: Barbers, Barista & Kitchen.

These folksy, home-spun artisans of hair have made quite the name for themselves out west. With 9 shops on the go with more to follow this year, Grindstone has brought back good old customer service with just the right amount of vintage kitsch.

No bookings or appointments here though – just walk on in, write your name up on the chalkboard and wait your turn. Grindstone specialises in cutting and styling men’s hair, beard grooming, throat, face and head shaves – all delivered by seasoned experts.

There’s more though – much more. Adjacent to their Hopper’s Crossing Store you’ll find Grindstone Kitchen, featuring a cracking menu that pays homage to some cultural icons (anyone feel like a Biggie Smalls brekkie?) and covers a great range of tastes.

And then, of course, there’s the coffee... and community!

So next time you’re thinking of a trim for yourself or the little one, you could do a lot worse than to step back to the high art of the barber and step into a Grindstone.
