Keeping Tarneit beautiful with Clean Up Australia

Littering and dumping rubbish in the natural environment is never ok. It spoils the natural beauty of a place and worse, can seriously impact our delicate ecosystems.

Almost 30 years ago, self-described ‘average Aussie bloke’ Ian Kiernan was dismayed by the impact of rubbish in Sydney Harbour, and realised it was time to do something about it.

So was launched Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day, drawing 40,000 volunteers together to bring new sparkle back to Australia’s most famous harbour.

The following year in 1990 Clean Up Australia Day was born. After all, if one community could be encouraged to act, then so could the nation. This time, 300,000 volunteers turned out in support of an initiative that has only grown larger in the years since.

The resulting figures are impressive. Over the past 27 years, Australians have put more than 32 million hours into cleaning the environment, collecting over 344 thousand tonnes of rubbish. And every little bit helps.

We all know that Tarneit and the west is a place of distinct natural beauty. Let’s keep it that way. This year, local community group NatureWest invite you to join them and help keep Tarneit beautiful as part of Clean Up Australia Day 2018.

Meeting Sunday 4th of March at 10am at Baden Powel Skate Park, NatureWest are on a mission to make sure Seasons Main Park and the nearby creek are kept pristine. There’ll be bags provided, and gloves if you can’t spare your own.

The afternoon will wrap with a BBQ lunch as a thank you for your efforts. So not only is it a good reason to get out and keep your town clean, it’s a great excuse to meet new people with a common cause.

Those interested in helping NatureWest and the Wyndham City Waste Team are advised to call 9742 0777, or book at the Wyndham City website. Participation is free.
