Wyndham City occupies a distinctive place in the wider Melbourne landscape. It lies just west of the CBD, with extensive urban infrastructure of its own. It is within easy reach of stunning national parks to the northwest. And it’s close to the coast, even something of a gateway to Geelong and the Surf Coast beyond.
In fact, with warmer weather about to unfurl, it’s the ideal time to get out and explore the best of the west. With that in mind, here are a few ideas to kick-start your spring calendar!
UNDERWATER WONDERS
A site of international significance, the Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary is a great spot for SCUBA diving and snorkelling. Besides the flora and fauna on display, two heritage-listed shipwrecks – the Henrietta and the Diane - await the eager underwater explorer! Learn more at the Parks Victoria website.
BEAUTIFUL BALLARAT
Founded during the gold rush of the 1850s, Ballarat retains its old world charm to a significant degree with beautiful period architecture wherever you look. Visit the Gold Museum and Sovereign Hill, or wile away your time browsing the fabulous Sturt Street shops. Explore some more ideas for a Ballarat day trip here.
THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD
There’s simply no end of things for you to do along the marvellous Great Ocean Road. This 244km stretch starts at Torquay just the other side of Geelong and winds around to Allansford near Warrnambool. See the Twelve Apostles, explore the Otways and enjoy the legendary beaches of the Surf Coast! Give yourself a few days and really take your time to wind along – you won’t be sorry!
DISTRICT DOCKLANDS
The heart of Melbourne’s waterside retail and entertainment precinct, District Docklands is all set to burst into life this spring. Ride the Melbourne Star, experience a new dimension of fun at ArtVo, and spend some time with the furry friends of the Lost Forest. With a Hoyts Cinema set to open in the coming months and a wide selection of food offerings, it’s a fantastic way to spend a day.
MOUNT MACEDON & HANGING ROCK
Discover the source of one of Australia’s enduring legends at Hanging Rock, a former volcano – more accurately, a mamelon - approximately 70km north from Tarneit. Or, explore the beauty of the private gardens and the fine houses of Mount Macedon, founded as a summer retreat by the wealthy elite of post gold rush Melbourne.
Of course, there’s literally a world of possibilities on your door for you to explore from the well-serviced surrounds of Tarneit. Why not share some of your favourite day trip adventures with us on our Facebook page? In the meantime, say goodbye to those winter blues and have a fantastic spring!
