It’s been talked about for years, but now it’s finally becoming a reality. With the recent announcement that Avalon Airport is opening up to international flights later this year, Tarneit will find itself in almost equal distance to not just one, but two major airports connecting it to the world beyond our shores.

The Avalon announcement was welcomed by Wyndham City Mayor Cr Peter Maynard as ‘a major catalyst for investments, jobs growth and tourism in the region’ for decades to come, encouraging bigger companies to relocate or set up new operations in Wyndham.

The sentiments were shared by Wyndham Council’s tourism and major events portfolio holder John Gibbons, who told the Star Weekly that with the State Rose and Garden Show, the Fromage a Trios Cheese Festival, the Wyndham Art Prize and other activities, the region had successfully positioned itself as something of an events capital.

With $20 million from the Federal Budget earmarked for the airport and construction already underway, up to 200 jobs are expected to be created for the area.

Better still, according to the ABC the new terminal will be capable of exporting 14 tonnes of fresh produce every day, right from the heart of the Victorian food bowl – potentially opening up brand new international markets for the growers and businesses of Melbourne’s west.

Indeed, it really does seem like the future of the area is ripe with promise, indicating that Orchard really is ‘a place to grow’. We can’t wait to see it all come together... now if you’ll excuse us, we have some flights to book!
