Scienceworks is one of the true jewels to be found west of Melbourne’s CBD. Established in 1992 in the suburb of Spotswood, it is a Museums Victoria site dedicated to introducing kids to the wonders of science, and how it can open our eyes and minds to the world around us.

Packed with displays and activities including hands-on experiments, demonstrations and tours, the museum is home to the amazing Melbourne Planetarium as well as a giant Tesla Coil, capable of producing three-metre lightning bolts!

From now until October 7th, it’s also home to Above and Beyond. This extraordinary collaboration between Boeing, NASA and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum lets you explore the wonder of flight and space travel through immersive flight simulations and more.

Among its interactive attractions, you’ll get to fly an aeroplane designed by you, pilot a drone into the eye of a hurricane, and even ride an elevator to the very edge of space! It’s all about educating and inspiring the next generation of aviators and astronauts, encouraging them to think about space, flight and technology in new ways.

And the interactive technology that lets you explore these concepts is truly impressive. Scienceworks has delivered an innovative and truly engrossing experience for aspiring young flyers and anyone who has felt the lure of the skies above and what lies beyond them. If you have even a passing interest in space or technology, you’ll want to get along and see this for yourself.

It’s right at home too in the West, making a good match for the nearby RAAF facilities and museum! Above and Beyond is at Scienceworks until October 7. For full details including session times and ticket prices, visit their website.
